An interagency meeting for the community-based study on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and how it can be used as adjunct meal supplement was led by the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST – FNRI) along with partners from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), DOST-CALABARZON, and the DOST – Philippine Council for Health Research Development (DOST – PCHRD). This meeting was held on April 28, 2020 at Santa Rosa, Laguna.

The meeting was to establish community reconnaissance on the sites of the study: the City Health Office LGU quarantine facility, and the Sta. Rosa Community Hospital, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Also, the Research Team oriented the medical and dietary Staff of the LGU and the Hospital on the study protocol. The aim of the study is to evaluate the beneficial effects of virgin coconut oil given to suspect and probable cases of COVID-19 who are quarantined in the LGU center or in the hospital.

Currently, the study is already being implemented and the hospital has existing qualified patients, hence the intervention has started.

This community-based study is part of DOST’s response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
